The center tab in Word 2016 is a unique critter with a special purpose: Text placed at a center tab is centered on a line. Unlike centering a paragraph, only text placed at the center tab stop is centered. This feature is ideal for centering text in a header or footer, which is about the only time you need the center tab stop.
You can find the feature in the 'Edit' tab in the top toolbar of your Mac. How to use the advanced find and replace feature in Word on a Mac. Open Microsoft Word on your Mac. The figure shows an example of a center tab. The text on the left is at the start of the paragraph, which is left-justified. But the text typed after the tab is centered on the line.
Here’s how to make that happen:
- Start a new paragraph, one containing text that you want to center.Center tabs inhabit one-line paragraphs.
- Click the Tab gizmo on the ruler until the center tab stop shows up.The Center Tab Stop icon is shown in the margin.
- Click the ruler to set the center tab stop’s position.Generally speaking, the center tab stop dwells in the middle of the page. That location could be the 3-inch mark or the 3-1/4-inch mark.
- Type any text to start the line.In the figure, the text A Trip to Uranus appears at the start of the line. Typing such text is optional, depending on what you’re formatting.
- Press the Tab key.Imazing 2 6 4 (9302). The insertion pointer hops over to the center tab stop.
- Type the text you want to center.As you type, the text is centered on the line. Don’t type too much; the center tab is a single-line thing.
- Press Enter to end the line of text.
Center tab stops are used primarily in a document header or footer, or when typing a title. Class 6 social studies chapter 1.
When you need only centered text on a line, use the center paragraph format instead of a center tab stop.
PLEASE NOTE: These steps do not apply to Word 2011 (i.e., Word 14.x) for Mac!

Solution on Mac for Word 2016 and later, and Word for Office 365
If your version of Word is 14.xx or earlier, or if you're not using MathType 7 or later do not proceed! These steps will not work.

- On the top menu bar, click Tools, then Templates and Add-ins.
- In the resulting window, under Global templates and add-ins, the following items should be present and checked as shown:
- If the item(s) from step 3 are present and the Commands one checked, click OK. If they're present but not checked, click to place a checkmark in the box for MathType Commands 2016.dotm, then click OK. The MathType tab should now be present in Word.
- If the items from step 3 are not present, that's OK. Please try this:
- Click the + button beneath the box where the checked items should be. This will open a window titled Choose a template to add.
- In the window, navigate to this folder:
Applications:MathType:Office Support - Find MathType Commands 2016.dotm, click to select it, and click Open.
- This will bring it into the Templates and Add-ins box. Make sure there's a checkmark in the box to its left. If it doesn't, click to place a checkmark there.
- This should restore the MathType tab in Word. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load it in.
